Apple launched a new MacBook Air in Brooklyn, New York, today.David Phelan
1 It has been upgraded to the display it deserves
The new MacBook Air has a Retina display, at last. When the Air first launched, it was hard, or impossible, to fit a display into something so thin without a frame around it, hence the wide bezel on it until now, and the resolution was decent for the time but not cutting-edge now. So it now has the double whammy of a high-resolution, gorgeously vivid screen in a very narrow frame.

2 It looks and feels sensational.
Pick it up and it feels impossibly light, impressively slim. It weighs 2.75lbs and is smaller by 17% and 10% thinner than the last model. The MacBook is the Apple laptop for the person who puts portability ahead of anything else. But the MacBook Air has a bigger screen, 13.3in against the MacBook’s 12in model.

3 Space gray, silver, gold and green.
The new color, gold, is very snazzy. It has a beautiful, almost peachy glow to it and it has to be seen in the flesh, not in my rough-and-ready shots, to be appreciated. The other colors are what you’d expect. And green? Because it’s made from 100% recycled aluminum, it’s the greenest Mac product yet. Oh, and that recycled aluminum? It comes from Apple, from the parts of other Apple products which are not used. Because Apple begins with high-grade aluminum, it has plenty of stuff which it can recycle into this all-new aluminum alloy, created by Apple metallurgists, which then becomes MacBook Air laptops.

4 It’s well-connected.
It replaces the USB-A sockets with two USB-C. That means it is better connected than the MacBook which only has one USB-C. Even though the MacBook Air is lower-priced than the MacBook. It still has a headphone jack, too. And although this is the most affordable MacBook in the range, it has the latest, third-generation MacBook keyboard, as found on the latest MacBook Pro.
It’s also pretty powerful, which means it’s capable of handling vocal commands of "Hey, Siri".

And, most enjoyably, this laptop has Touch ID. Previously restricted only to the MacBook Pro, and only the more expensive models of that range, the fingerprint sensor is a quiet revelation. Sure, if you have an Apple Watch, you can set that up to unlock your Mac for you, but to gently touch your finger to a little, glossy black square is as intimate and pleasing on the MacBook Air as on other devices.

5 It still has all-day battery life.
You can surf the web for 12 hours, Apple says, on the new MacBook Air. All-day battery life was one of the features that the original MacBook Air made front and center.

6 The original design is still available.
The most affordable MacBook is the MacBook Air. And the most affordable MacBook Air is the previous design which is still in the range, and costs $999. So don’t expect that familiar look to vanish for a while yet.

From its first appearance 10 years ago, the Macbook Air has been a hit. Apple never removed it from its range, even when other of its laptops changed and morphed, because it was continuously successful.
It was the entry-level MacBook, available at a lower price because it had a lower-resolution display, something which owners consistently told Apple they wanted to change. Now, it has. Here are all the updates about which you should know.
