At some point, we’d have to expect that the Switch will run out of great games to get ported to the Nintendo portable console. Thankfully, that isn’t happening anytime soon. I hardly think I’m going to spoil my review by telling you already that Diablo 3: The Eternal Collection is just another great way to play a great game.
Diablo 3 was first playable on PC around six years ago. Since then it has been continuously supported and refined into one of the greatest Action-RPGs of all time. That doesn’t change with the Switch version. Everything that has been released to date is here for players to experience. The Story of the initial release and the Reaper of Souls expansion.
It’s been a while since I actually ran the stories and playing through it again (for the first time as a Wizard) was enjoyable. For a first-timer, I believe that the whole story is entertaining and has a dark fantasy vibe that will resonate with those who have been enjoying the recent Haloween festivities.
That’s not the last of what’s on offer though. Much like the other iterations of the game, Adventure mode is there for those looking for a loot grind. It’s an entertaining and interesting mode where I could continuously seek to improve my character and make the most powerful character I could. This is most enjoyed playing with other players and can be done with friends or matchmaking. The most enjoyable experience I found was with a few friends on the sofa all playing together.
The Switch does produce a lower quality of graphics than other platforms but nothing that made it unplayable. The fact that this is playable at all on a handheld platform is impressive and while visuals take a small hit, framerate doesn’t seem to falter at all. This is a must considering the fast-paced moment to moment action. Diablo III is at it’s best when you have a myriad of spells all going off creating a firework display of attacks on the hordes of enemies.
This Switch Version utilises the great changes already bestowed on other console versions to make character management as easy as possible.
The equipment manager allows players to easily see what loot they’ve acquired and equipped the best.
The only other addition to the PC version is the ability to dodge-roll. It seems so small and those who have played on PC may not understand the necessity of it but it makes the world of difference for console versions due to the way characters move.
All seven released clbades are available from the get-go so those who maybe played the first time around have yet to experience the Crusader or the Necromancer. Both are welcome additions and just provide more interesting ways to play. The original five are still stellar and over the years have been buffed and nerfed in a variety of different ways that even as someone who has played them before will get something new out of this experience.
This version even gets the seasonal play; my prefered way of playing. It’s a mode where you have a certain window to create a brand new character and level from one to as high as you can go.
It provides a new challenge of making the best use of your time and competing against other players to get the best character and the highest score on the leaderboards.
Diablo 3 will always be a great game and being on the Switch is just providing another way to play. It’s as valid as any other way and still as enjoyable as it was for me on day one of its initial release on the PC all those years ago. Be it with others or alone, this continues to be my favourite Action-RPG and it’s going to take something big to knock it off its perch.
