Full Price NBN Delivers Half The Speed Claims ACCC – channelnews

Thousands of Australians are still being provided less than half the internet speeds they’re paying for on their current plans, according to the latest data on NBN fixed-line connections from the ACCC.

This is the third Measuring Broadband Australia (MBA) report from the ACCC and it found that the internet service providers (ISP) with the fastest broadband this quarter was TPG followed by Aussie Broadband, iiNet, Optus, Telstra and MyRepublic.

Competition among ISP to perform well in the ACCC’s speed tests is producing good results for fixed-line NBN customers, although some customers still experience much slower speeds than available to others on the same plan.

The report shows that 69 per cent of connections reached download speeds higher than 90 per cent of the plan’s known maximum speeds, while 7 per cent reported less than 50 per cent of that maximum.

Indicating that approximately a quarter of the tested connections reported speeds between 50 per cent and 90 per cent.

“Industry says it is working hard to contact customers whose NBN connections aren’t able to deliver the maximum speeds of their plan,” ACCC Chair Rod Sims said and encourages customers who aren’t getting the speeds they paid for to contact their ISP and update or change their plans.

In more positive news, broadband speeds did not slow down much in busy hours (typically 7pm-11pm). with speeds reducing by about 1% on both standard speed plans and higher speed NBN plans.

NBN services continue to outperform ADSL services, with NBN plans sold with a maximum speed of 25 Mbps on average achieving a download speed of 22.7 Mbps during the busy hours, three times the average busy hour download speed recorded for ADSL plans.

Unsurprisingly, regional services receive lower speeds than urban services, but the difference is not significant, with those in urban areas receiving 84.8% of maximum speeds on average compared with 83% of speeds in regional areas.
