Unveiled at the Sao Palo motor show, the HiLux GR (Gazoo Racing) Sport has no extra power, but some significant changes under its sticker-laden body.

It was fully designed and developed in Brazil, where just 420 examples will be sold.

Immediately apparent is the visual treatment given to the popular ute, with the signature Gazoo Racing red and black livery smattered across the front and side, as well as a huge silver ‘Toyota’ typeface grille insert.

Inside there are leather seats with ‘GR’ accents on the headrests, push-start ignition button and floor mats.

The 'Toyota' typeface grille is hard to miss. The ‘Toyota’ typeface grille is hard to miss.

The more significant changes are to do with the HiLux’ handling, Toyota has provided different front springs and dampers for the HiLux GR Sport, and a new – ‘more linear’ – steering tune.

The HiLux’ outputs of 130kW/450Nm remain unchanged from local examples fitted with the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine and six-speed automatic transmission.

No Brazilian pricing has been announced for the HiLux GR Sport.

While the changes to the GR Sport are mainly aesthetic, the handling has been given an upgrade courtesy of new suspension and steering. While the changes to the GR Sport are mainly aesthetic, the handling has been given an upgrade courtesy of new suspension and steering.

A Toyota Australia spokesperson told CarsGuide the GR Sport is a ‘Brazilian-market only’ endeavour, adding that although the company is keen to promote the Gazoo Racing brand locally, there are no plans for a similar model in Australia.

“That performance space is filled by the Rugged X which already has altered suspension, but the revised steering in the GR Sport could be studied for Australia.

“It’s possible we can cherry pick items [from the GR Sport] in the future, but there are no plans for now,” he said.
