THE Darling Downs has reaffirmed its place as one of the most overweight and obese regions in Queensland.
New data released this week by Queensland Health revealed 66 per cent of Darling Downs residents were either overweight or obese.
This was the fifth most overweight and obese region in the state, behind the North West, Central West, South West and Wide Bay regions, all of which had a rate of 68 per cent.
About two in three Queenslanders on average were either overweight or obese. The various health service areas in and around Brisbane had the lowest rate of overweight or obese residents, but all were over the 50 per cent mark.
While the overweight and obese rate for the Toowoomba region, released in the Health of Queenslanders 2018 report, may seem high, it is down from 82 per cent in 2008.
Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said the data would help inform future health service planning.
“Over the last 10 years we can see continued improvement in the health of Queenslanders,” Dr Young said.
“The report shows that change is occurring. We are becoming more informed and empowered to reduce our health risks and our state is becoming a healthier place.”
“While it’s great to see some very positive changes, we know there is still more work to do, particularly to address preventable diseases and the health gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and others.”
