Australian Stephanie Gilmore tied the record for surf legend and former mentor Layne Beachley by winning her seventh world title on the opening day of the Maui Pro World Tour final in Hawaii.

The world title, in the best waves of the women's world tour in Honolua Bay, was unexpectedly announced by the shock suffered during the loss, Gilmore's only competitor, American Lakey Peterson.

"It's so, so special. It's amazing, "said Gilmore.

"It's an honor to be sitting next to you Layne. To match you is such an honor. "

Gilmore dedicated his victory to Pierre Agnes, CEO of Quiksilver.

The 54-year-old pilot went missing at sea on a fishing trip with his boat stranded in Hossegor, France, earlier this year.

Peterson was beaten by Alana Blanchard, the new Hawaiian and local mother, in a second-round result that earned Gilmore the seventh-place title in the world.

Three minutes from the end, Peterson took off on a wave requiring a lead of 7.83, but was unsuccessful.

Gilmore was on a bluff with friends watching the action when the drama stopped and she won her first world crown since 2014.

She threw her arms in the air and applauded when she realized that she had won.

"Oh my God," said Gilmore when he was crowned with a wreath of flowers.

Gilmore won the first of his seven crowns as a rookie in 2007, followed by titles in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2014.

Beachley recently told the Daily Telegraph that she expects Gilmore to "equalize and then crush" her seven world championship titles and that the 30-year-old has the same ambition.

Gilmore told the Daily Telegraph that it was also his plan while paying tribute to Beachley.

"Layne is a source of inspiration for me, for so many surfers and for many reasons other than her surf successes," said Gilmore.

"It's his character, his way of behaving, to represent the female surf in the world, it is the legacy that I would like to match."

Gilmore was the dominant surfer throughout the 2018 season, winning the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Brach, Oi Rio Pro in Brazil and J-Bay Open in South Africa.
