A photo published on social media revealed the reality of an iconic spot on the South Island, described as New Zealand's most instinctive hike.
Roy's Peak, a mountain located between Wanaka and Glendhu Bay, is a popular spot for tourists posing for photos on Instagram – but an image published on Reddit, subtitled "The Queue" social media, "shows a long line of hikers, all waiting to take the same picture. the New Zealand Herald reports.
To reach the famous Roy's Peak Lookout, hikers have to embark on a challenging day's walk before being rewarded with breathtaking views of Lake Wanaka and the summit of Mount Aspiring.
On Reddit, user Tombo_64 described his experiences on the famous South Island Trail.
"We were very lucky, we came across some people taking pictures. We waited a moment or two before taking ours. We went ahead and it must have been rush hour and I sincerely believe that the waiting line lasted at least an hour. "
Another speaker, kgal1298, described a tour guide in Wanaka, tired of the hype around social media.
"My guide continued to give us directional mistakes in this city because he hated the hype around them. Then, at some point during the trip, he did not give us a Wi-Fi pbadword because he was too busy with us to play on the phone during our free time. I was 30 years old at the time and he legitimately felt that I was back in elementary school.
RabbitOHare responded to this message by describing it as "messed up".
"Soooo if you just want to enjoy the view? I would be very upset if I took time off work and paid to travel to a special place just to get away from a unique moment in my life.
"This is the kind of place I would like to immerse myself in and I'm happy to share it with so many others around me. However, these people monopolize this panoramic view. Seems messed up. "
A similar phenomenon has been observed on the famous Norwegian rock Trolltunga (Troll Tongue), where hundreds of tourists line up for hours to get this Instagram shot.
The Spin the Windrose travel blog described Roy's Peak as "New Zealand's most instinctive hike" – and author Abbi asked if the popular track was overrated.
"You seem to be in a queue at a few spots on the trail. At the top and lookout, people wait and queue to take this picture, "she wrote, adding that most people were not even bored to continue to the summit after visiting the lookout.
However, she concluded that the hype was well deserved – especially if you leave early in the morning. The second time she borrowed the trail, Abbi chose to leave at 3 am to reach the popular viewpoint about half an hour before sunrise – and found her deserted.
"When you see Lake Wanaka while the sun rises on the hills behind you, nothing else matters. It must be one of the most beautiful views in the world and one of the most memorable I'll ever see in my life, "she wrote.
"Who cares if there are a lot of other people hiking? Is it important that the climb itself is boring? So what happens if there is shit of sheep on the track? And who cares to know there are a billion more pictures of this same view on Instagram? "
