DENVER – Denver City Council voted 12-1 to approve a plan to build a safe injection site in the Mile High City.
However, steps still need to be taken to open one in Denver. The state legislature will have to pbad a law allowing public money to fund sites in Colorado.
Secure injection sites are supposed to allow drug users from a supervised location to use hard drugs such as heroin and cocaine. This would also prevent drug users from using public places and advocates of the idea say that sites also reduce diseases and save lives from drug overdoses.
Opponents of this idea argue that it allows drug addicts to continue to use drugs and even encourages drug use.
If this one receives final approval, Denver would be among several US cities to have these sites.
