[ad_1]

The captain of the DRAGONS, Gareth Widdop, reportedly asked for a release from the last three years of his contract.

Widdop, who earns about $ 1 million per season and is under contract until 2021, is said to be homesick and wants to return to England.

Fairfax reports that the decision shocked the Dragons who are ready to reject the claim because of the importance of Widdop for the team and their title hopes.

According to Fairfax, a number of English Super League clubs are interested in Widdop, including Huddersfield.

Widdop has developed a strong partnership with its halves partner Ben Hunt during the 2018 season.

Widdop never played professionally in England, he had emigrated to Melbourne when he was 16 years old. He climbed the ranks of the Melbourne Storm, playing 70 games before moving to the Dragons in 2014.

He signed a five-year contract with the Dragons in 2017, which would keep him at the club until 2021.

The news of Widdop's request comes barely a day after being revealed, the half-star Warriors Shaun Johnson demanded the release of his contract as the uncertainty surrounding his future player continues.

According to the NZ Herald, Johnson contacted Warriors GM Cameron George and his coach Stephen Kearney on Tuesday about their desire to leave the final year of his contract.

Although the club has not yet offered him a contract beyond 2019 – and he is unlikely to do so – he would have rejected the request, insisting that the New Zealand international verify his contract.

While the Sharks were tied to Johnson after Valentine Holmes left, the Warriors reportedly rejected Johnson's request.
