The statement of a Chinese scientist that he would have created the first genetically modified babies in the world has caused a public outcry and investigation by Chinese health authorities.
In a video posted on YouTube Sunday, Dr. He Jiankui, of the Southern University of Science and Technology of Shenzen, announced the birth of binoculars whose DNA had been altered to prevent infection by HIV.
He says he used gene editing technology CRISPR to disable a gene related to HIV transmission and says the two baby girls are now resistant to HIV.
His claims, however, are unverified and, after much criticism, the National Health Commission of China ordered the authorities to "conduct a serious investigation and verify" the doctor's claims.
