When Princess Eugenie walked down the aisle of St. George's Chapel to marry Jack Brooksbank, she challenged the tradition of the royal wedding by choosing not to wear a veil.
In doing so, she proudly showed her scoliosis scar running down her middle back. The scar came from a surgical operation performed 16 years ago, while she was only 12 years old, and Eugenie was very open about her patient's health condition.
In July of this year, the 28-year-old shared her x-ray exams showing the eight-inch titanium rods and the one-and-a-half-inch screws that still support her spine.
In writing for the Royal National Orthopedic Hospital – the hospital that operated on her – the princess related her stay at the hospital.
"After three days in intensive care, I spent a week in one unit and six days in a wheelchair, but I was walking again afterwards," she wrote.
"My back problems were part of my life, as they would be for any 12 year old. Kids can now watch me and know that the operation is working.
"I am living proof of how the hospital can change people's lives."
Now, talking to Hi!Duchess Fergie shared her mother's pride moment when she saw Princess Eugenie in wedding dress, symbol of her struggle to overcome her difficulties.
"When [Eugenie] walked and walked tall, with scoliosis … We never thought she was going to be a possibility, and here she is without a veil, "said the Duchess, beaming with pride.
"Their wedding was about love, inclusivity and the future. And then they move forward forcefully because that's what they are. They will always be on the edge of inspiring change. "
