MEET Toyota HiLux's newest rival in America.

Jeep removed the covers from the much-anticipated Gladiator double cab.

The new workhorse, based on the iconic Wrangler 4WD, is expected to join the burgeoning one ton uranium market in 2020, taking the popular HiLux and Ford's Ranger as an example.

This is the first time that Jeep has been involved in this segment since 1992 and brings new life to the name of Gladiator, which debuted in the 1960s.

"The demand for this unique vehicle from our loyal Jeep customers is enormous.

and pickup truck buyers everywhere. Born of a rich and proud legacy of rugged and reliable Jeep trucks, Gladiator combines rugged utility, versatility and functionality to create the best performing medium truck of all time, "said Jeep North America Director Tim Kuniskis .

Jeep stretched the Wrangler's 787 mm bases to accommodate a larger cabin and deck.

In the same way as Wrangler, the Gladiator will feature both soft top and hardtop versions and a folding windshield, providing motorists with a first experience of open-air use.

The power will come from a powerful 3.6-liter V6 petrol engine (212 kW / 353 Nm), paired with a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic transmission.

In a market dominated by diesel engines, Toyota and Mitsubishi are the only major players to offer gasoline. They both use smaller four-cylinder units, badociated with two-wheel drive.

The petrol variant will be joined later by a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel engine (194 kW / 599 Nm) coupled to an eight-speed car. Diesel flow rates make it the most powerful in its clbad.

The petrol versions will go into production overseas in 2019, followed by diesel. When the Gladiator arrives in Australia, both engines should be available.

All models are four-wheel drive and have a towing capacity of 3500 kg and a payload of 725 kg, which corresponds to most competitors.

The Gladiator will also offer serious off-road potential thanks to locking differentials, an approach angle of 43.6 degrees and a starting angle of 26 degrees, as well as a skating depth that can reach 760 mm.

The Gladiator will feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, accessed via a 7.0 or 8.4 inch touchscreen, depending on specifications. Interior buyers have the choice of a fabric or leather and various interior storage compartments.

The exterior styling reflects the new Wrangler with the grille and design of the retro Jeep headlights.

"Unmistakably a truck and instantly recognizable as a Jeep, the all-new Gladiator 2020 is the perfect vehicle for any outdoor adventure," says Kuniskis.
