Conservative Liberals Ban Defection

A conservative federal Liberal MP has ruled out resigning from his party and running as an independent if he loses his preselection to recontest his seat in Sydney.

Craig Kelly faces a concerted push from moderate members of the Liberal Party who think they have the numbers to get him out of Hughes' seat.

But Kelly says he is "absolutely" confident of being re-elected Liberal candidate and will remain loyal to the Morrison government until the next election.

"I will certainly not leave the Liberal Party," he told ABC radio on Thursday.

John Ruddick, a former right-wing member of the NSW Liberal Party, believes that Kelly is badured of losing the battle of preselections.

Mr. Ruddick urges him to "bite the bullet" and sit as an independent.

But Kelly says he has a contract with the people of Hughes.

"Last year, when I entered my name on the ballot as a Liberal MP, I signed a contract to sit during this period as a Liberal MP," he said. he declared.

"That's what I'm proud to do, I'll continue to do it."

Julia Banks left the Liberal Party earlier this week to sit as an independent, making it even more precarious the power of the minority Morrison government over power.

If Mr. Kelly pbaded the crossroads, it would be a deadly blow almost fatal.

Labor spokesman Chris Bowen said the coalition government has long since pbaded the critical threshold of dysfunction and chaos.

"It is clear every day the absence of legislative agenda, chaos, lack of clear plan for Australia, and they are totally and totally focused on their own short-term survival", Mr. Bowen said.
