At your fingertips with DJI's Osmo Pocket Gimbal – TechCrunch

I must admit that I quickly warmed up for the Osmo Pocket. The original ticket earlier in the day is rather skeptical, largely because of the price. And although I maintain the previous badessment that the price of $ 349 is prohibitive for the mainstream market that the company seems to aim, I am quite seduced by this device after a few hours.

We plan to do something more in depth with our video team in a few weeks, but in the time that I spent with Pocket after the announcement today, I see a lot of potential here, especially in the hands of much more competent videographers.

This is not to say that it is a professional level device. In fact, it's the opposite. Despite the fact that it costs almost double the standard Osmo, the Pocket is a more democratized version of the standard category of the DJI Spark in the category of gimbals. As such, it relies heavily on predefined scenes, similar to those you'll find on Mavic drones.

It's quite simple and the Osmo Pocket certainly has many fewer points of failure than a drone. Among other things, if you manage to plant it in a tree, it's up to you. Right out of the box, you download the app, plug the Lightning dongle or USB-C to your phone and choose a scene. From there, he will guide you through the shooting process, then pack it carefully, with the changes and cheesy music.

It is essentially preconceived for sharing on the social. And that's really the main audience for a product like this. Serious shooters will probably not be very inclined to rely heavily on the device, but with minimal effort, a beginner shooter can create impressive images. I mean, I've captured a bunch of nice footage after spending an hour around the Times Square subway station.

These are just commuters coming and going. You can imagine the kind of things you can recover when you integrate them in a more stimulating environment. And the size of the miniature means you can maneuver it in smaller places. This will probably not be a replacement for the GoPro, but many boxes and optional packages will probably allow you to make interesting plans of action.

The product is certainly endowed with the underlying technology that allows to create impressive and innovative images. Pre-loaded scenes lower the entry barrier, but business users can customize things as they please, while the built-in display allows you to take live photos without connecting to the camera. However, the screen is small and what you can do is still quite limited.

I maintain my previous badessment that the Pocket is a product without a clear audience, especially considering the price. Given what he can do, however, he is certain to find a dedicated fan base.
