An 11-year-old girl, stabbed eight times during a frantic attack in the community of Red Center, Hermannsburg, would have recovered after the traumatic event.

Police said the girl should undergo "a small surgery just to clean some wounds".

"For someone who has suffered so much, she is doing very well," a police spokeswoman told ABC Alice Springs.

The attack reportedly occurred around 6 pm in the isolated community 130 kilometers southwest of Alice Springs.

An 18 year old man was arrested near the scene of the incident.

Although no charges have yet been laid on the attack, the man is still in custody in Alice Springs.

Police reacted quickly

Police Minister Nicole Manison described the incident as a "very random" attack, but said she was not aware of all the details.

"The girl is in Alice Springs being treated," said Manison.

"After what I understood, she'll be fine, but it's still a horrible story."

She added that the police had promptly taken steps to locate the alleged perpetrator.

"They have the person, it has been transferred to Alice Springs and an investigation is under way," said Ms. Manison.

Police said their initial investigations indicated that the incident "was not related to domestic violence".
