Hyundai has shrunk the SUV.
The brand plans to introduce a mini-SUV at a price below $ 20,000, cutting more than $ 5,000 from some of the top-selling brands.
The Hyundai Venue will be located under the Kona in the brand's lineup and will appeal to younger buyers with a choice of eight exterior colors, including Green Apple, Denim and Scarlet Red. There is even the possibility of a yellow roof.
The details are slim with regard to the new model, which was unveiled at the New York auto show, but it is being accelerated in Australia and is expected to arrive in the second half of this year.
As with a growing number of small SUVs, the site will not have any off-road claim. It will only be available in front-wheel drive and will be powered by a 1.6-liter turbo-free petrol engine, compatible with either six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.
The site will be built in Korea, but its management and suspension will be specially designed for the local market by Hyundai Australia engineers.
It is likely that sacrifices will be made at low cost, as automated emergency braking and other driver badistance technologies should be additional cost options. AEB, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Driver Attention and Rear Cross Traffic Signal are probably part of the Supplemental Safety Pack, as is the case with sedan i30.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be standard, as will an eight-inch touch screen, two USB ports, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a rear-facing camera.
Hyundai said the site would be a unique product, not offered by other manufacturers, although Suzuki's Ignis loudspeaker is a similar concept.
"The brand new site may be small, but it emphasizes convenience and personality," says Mike O'Brien, Product Planning Manager at Hyundai.
The personality to which it alludes stems from three choices of roof colors – black, white and yellow – as well as the option of choosing an imitation leather and denim interior with fabric interior.
The style is similar to that of Kona, with the brand's new grille, composite LEDs and cube-shaped headlamps. Standard wheels will be 15 inches, while more expensive models will carry 17s.
It is 130 mm shorter and 31 mm shorter than a Kona. Its much smaller two-level luggage compartment allows you to store your valuables out of sight.
While Kona shares the basics with the Hyundai i30 hatch, the Venue is a smaller car. This is a formula that has been a huge success for the Mazda CX-3, based on a smaller and cheaper Mazda2.
This decision allowed the Mazda to compete with its rivals with larger and more expensive cars such as the Subaru XV and the Kona.
The arrival of a new high-priced baby SUV will give Hyundai a well-deserved boost this year. As with the rest of the market, the brand is suffering from a drop in sales. In the first three months of this year, it has slipped to fourth in the sales scale behind Mitsubishi, which is flying high on the backs of its priced SUVs and the new Triton Inn.
