"It's just average winter weather, but it's pretty cool because we've had above-average and certainly above-average fall conditions," said Taggart.

It may be better to delay the start tomorrow and Friday.

"It's cooler because we've had the hottest start of the year so far."

In the west, Penrith faces a cold snap with possible frosts for the next few mornings.

"The next three mornings, we expect 1, 2 and 3 degrees. [minimum] June at 7 degrees in Penrith, "said Taggart.

"There is a high pressure system in the south of Australia, which will give fairly clear skies and light winds, so we have relatively cool temperatures in the west.

"Closer to the city tempered by the sea surface temperatures of 20.4 degrees, closer to the coast, you will not get very cold mornings."

While showers are forecast for the weekend in Sydney, only coastal areas should receive rainfall.

This announces bad news for the dwindling water supply in Sydney as the level of dams continues to decline.

"Most of the heaviest downpours will be coastal, the dams will not get much rain, and even the watersheds close enough to the coast, a few millimeters, do not make a big difference."

Weatherzone meteorologist Craig McIntosh said, "The normal winter conditions have finally arrived."

"It really needs the solstice to have a prolonged cold weather," he said.

"Unfortunately, the places that need the least rain will be the ones that will get the most – everyone needs it, but some places more than others."

Mr. McIntosh said that the cool mornings might require the lighting of the heating blanket or the use of an extra mattress.

"It may be better to delay getting up tomorrow and Friday."
