The O-negative blood supply reached its lowest level this year, prompting the Australian Red Cross Blood Transfusion Services to donate to thousands of people of the rare blood group.
Over the next two weeks, the blood transfusion service will need 5,000 people to meet the demands of the hospital.

Habitual donors are still recovering from colds and flu, which has reduced O-negative reserves by less than two days, said Canadian Blood Services spokeswoman Helen Walsh.

"If you are O-negative, a family member could be too, we ask people to talk to their families and encourage them to donate," she said.
The flu season, particularly bad this winter, helped up to 1,300 donors a day to cancel appointments.
