With Veep on hold, many shows were hoping to increase their number of appointments. Instead, all return shows off Atlanta and Black-ish lost nominations. Emmy voters were much more interested in new shows with The Wonderful Mrs. Maisel GLOW and Barry having strong first seasons as well as voters Emmy discovering Insecure and The Good Place in their second season
The most interesting aspect of this year's four best comedies is that, one way or the other, they all deal with someone who is trying to get ahead in the entertainment industry. GLOW and The Wonderful Mrs. Maisel are period pieces about women who are trying to advance as artists, whatever they are actresses. Atlanta chronicles Southern musicians with Bryan Tyree Henry who gets his first nomination for the role of Paper Boi. Barry talks about a hitman turned actor in Los Angeles. These four comedies are all incredibly meritorious contenders in the Emmy race, but it is a bit worrisome that voters only grant a very specific type of story that is almost selfish.
Atlanta was the most nominated comedy of the year with 16 nominations, which is an astonishing increase over six last year. This was the winning threshold for past winners like Modern Family, Veep and 30 Rock . In fact, all the signs indicate that the best show of 2018 has had an incredibly successful Emmy night, aside from the fact that it's not particularly funny. This "dramatic" element has really hindered the shows in the past, but because Atlanta is so innovative and because Donald Glover is one of the most respected artists in the industry in this moment, he could just overcome that.
The wonderful Ms. Maisel on the other hand, is one of the most ambitious works that Amy Sherman-Palladino has ever shown on television in a career that has lasted almost 30 years. In One Season The wonderful Mrs Maisel has become the most successful Emmys' Amazon show with just about every branch celebrating comedy of the era. The nomination that has eluded the favorite is a recognition in the sound categories, which is one of the most accurate predictors of the Emmy race.
One of the most disconcerting results of this year's nominees is the lack of nominations for LIGHT . Both Alison Brie and Marc Maron have been snubbed by the acting branch after years of hard work in the industry. Both actors appeared to be locks for nominations after receiving individual SAG nominations. In fact, the actor who seemed the most vulnerable, Betty Gilpin, was the only actor to be named. Performers Apart GLOW did well in terms of nominations with recognition for series, writing, staging, and several categories of craftsmanship.
No new comedy exceeded expectations just like Barry . The dark morbid comedy has won 13 more nominations than any other first season HBO comedy in modern history. For whatever reason Barry has been underestimated in the past two months, but it has turned out to be the perfect comedy to excite Emmy voters. Even though it was a hitman, comedy was also about the nonsense and selfishness that lives in this very industry. So, of course, he played well with actors, directors and writers, but the biggest surprise was how many nominations he won in line races for a Los Angeles-based modern comedy.
The nominations have also introduced one of the most unexpected. "Feuds" in the recent history of awards. Bill Hader and Donald Glover both received five nominations this year for their respected comedies as well as for hosting SNL . The five nominations are in direct competition, which makes everyone wonder whether voters will spread wealth or whether any of them will go home empty-handed. Bill Hader never won an individual Emmy (though he won an Emmy 20 years ago when South Park won) and he deserves to have a big Emmy party. Donald Glover won two Emmys last year and had an amazing year as star of the movie Solo his music as Childish Gambino, and the undeniable sensation that is Atlanta . One of the most confusing trends of recent years with Emmy voters is their total membership in the Saturday Night Live distribution. This year, the set of comedy skits has seen five support appointments, including former winners Kate McKinnon and Alec Baldwin, a second nomination for Leslie Jones and the first-time nominees, Aidy Bryant and Kenan Thompson. There are so many new comedies on television to choose from and there is no clear reason why they fill the support categories with the SNL cast . He started during the political season with viral imitations of Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump, but in many ways, these appointments left politics. It will be curious to see how long these appointments will last before voters move on.
2018 was supposed to be the year of the restart with high hopes for new seasons of favorites Will & Grace Roseanne and Development Order . The broadcast networks were hoping to make a major comeback in the comedy categories, but in the end the reboots did not bump up with voters outside of a few support actress nominations. Whether out of disinterest or scandal, voters wanted to celebrate the future of television as opposed to the past. It will be interesting to see if the lack of celebration for reboots will impact potential reboots ahead or if networks will start trying to support new talent.
Overall, Emmy voters celebrated a long list of new names. comedy categories when in the past they were known to enter the autopilot in these races. Nominees for the first time include Betty Gilpin, Issa Rae, Rachel Brosnahan, Alex Borstein, Katt Williams, Tiffany Hadddish, Bryan Tyree Henry, Zazie Beetz, Aidy Bryant and Keenan Thompson.
