A man who fired on two NSW policemen before blaming himself was a big game hunter who enjoyed hunting trips to Africa.
Eric "Ric" Newman and his wife were fervent hunters. Their Glen Innes home was filled with taxidermy animals.
A neighbor told Sunday Telegraph, the 74-year-old man, was an avid hunter of trophies and the photos on Facebook show a lot of taxidermy in his home, including giraffes and bears.
Newman reportedly shot two police officers before being found dead in a Church Street home at 9:50 pm on Friday.
Both officers responded to a domestic violence incident at home.
A senior police officer was shot in the throat and his colleague sergeant on the side of the face after talking to the man, while a third uninjured police officer also went to the scene.
The two injured policemen remain in the hospital.
The gendarme and the sergeant on probation took the injured senior constable aboard his vehicle, which Deputy Commander of the Western Region, Assistant Commissioner Geoff, described as "great courage".
The neighbors helped the injured police until the paramedics arrived.
"I grabbed the police officer's neck where she was injured, and then, yes, I was just waiting with them for the police and the ambulance to arrive," Bryce Elliott told the media.
It is thought that another shot was heard before the extra police arrived and found the dead man.
A 59-year-old woman was also found nearby with minor injuries. The two injured officers were transported to the Gold Coast Hospital where they stayed.
The male agent has been treated and is in a stable condition while the female worker has undergone surgery and will receive additional treatment.
Nine News reported Sunday morning that her family had said the doctors had been able to remove almost all bullet fragments from her throat, but she remains in a coma.
Assistant Commissioner McKechnie told reporters Saturday that it was gratifying to see how the officers had behaved.
"We are very aware that we could very easily have lost two officers last night in this incident. Fortunately, this is not the case, "said McKechnie.
Police have opened an investigation into a critical incident and will present their findings to the coroner.
NSW Police Legacy has launched a call to directly badist the two officers and their families in their rehabilitation.
