COTUIT – Kevin Quinn, of Mashpee, was nervous about being a father.
The 32-year-old Navy combat veteran toured Afghanistan twice, had his own excavation business, and was considering a career in law enforcement. But the prospect of being a father ruffled his nerves.
"It was just a little nervousness for the first time and he was excited about it," said Rob Dinan, close friend of Quinn and Comrade Marine.
Her daughter was born Wednesday at the Cape Cod Hospital at 2:19, three days before Quinn was killed when her vehicle was hit by an erratic driver at Cotuit. It was shortly after midnight Saturday when he died; he had planned to get his wife, Kara, and their newborn daughter the same morning to bring them home.
The two full days that Quinn spent with his daughter, Logan Audrey Quinn, took away all the doubts he had about being a father.
"He was ecstatic, and so happy," said Dinan, who is also the spokesperson for Quinn's family. "He really felt what it was like to be a father, and I'm glad he did it."
Quinn was hit by a sedan driven by 22-year-old Mickey Rivera of Fall River. , who was declared dead on the scene, according to a statement from the Barnstable Police Department. A pbadenger from the sedan, 24-year-old Jocelyn Goyette of New Bedford, was wounded and taken to the Cape Cod hospital and transferred to a Boston area hospital, police and firefighters said. She stays in the hospital in critical condition.
No additional information on Rivera or Goyette was available Sunday evening.
Quinn was pinned in his SUV after the accident; firefighters used a hydraulic tool to remove it. He was taken by ambulance to South Shore Hospital, where he died later, police said.
Barnstable police investigate the incident. The police retained the names of the three people involved in the accident until Sunday afternoon pending an update on Goyette's condition.
A preliminary badysis suggested that Rivera was traveling east on Highway 28 when he collided with Quinn's 2012 SUV GMC, according to the Barnstable Police. Cotuit firefighters responded to a call at 12:14 pm and found the Toyota 2000 gray sedan torn in two and on fire, with both occupants ejected from the car.
Based on Mashpee police emergency issues just prior to the time of the accident, a police officer had begun the pursuit of a sedan. Asked about the scanner about the reason for the lawsuit, the officer cited erratic operation, speeding, way-finding, and multiple stop sign violations.
"We are at the beginning of what will be a full and thorough investigation into our involvement in the facts and circumstances that led to this terrible tragedy," wrote Mashpee Police Chief Scott Carline. "Our deepest condolences go to the victims and their families right now."
Carline asked questions about the accident at the Barnstable Police.
The news that Quinn was a victim of the accident is spreading rapidly through social media, and a GoFundMe page for his family had already raised some $ 80,000 at 8:00 pm
Quinn founded a digging company, Quinn Excavation and Septic, in Mashpee several years ago, according to Dinan.
After meeting six years ago, Dinan said he and Quinn were best friends.
"We just stuck up instantly because we were both Marines," Dinan said. "When you meet other Marines, you just have that instant fraternity."
Dinan said that Quinn helped a lot of friends who were financially in need, offering discount rates for his septic service.
"He was just a happy and happy person," he said. "He always had a joke, and always had a smile."
Quinn was deployed as a Navy from 2008 to 2011, said Dinan. After completing his overseas service, Quinn aspired to become a police officer at home.
He was also well known in the construction community, a tight-knit group where "everyone works for everyone and everyone knows everyone," according to the long-time friend from Quinn, Alex Yukna.
"He was one of the best," Yukna said. "He did it all right, he never burned anyone, not a single contractor on the Cape would say otherwise."
Yukna, 29, said he had known Quinn since over 20 years old, and both attended Mashpee High School.
"Someone made a huge mistake in taking this man's life," he said. "He was altruistic, absolutely selfless, he always had a light around him."
Quinn will be buried at the Mbadachusetts National Cemetery with military honors on August 6, Dinan said, and a funeral mbad will be held at the Christ the King parish at Mashpee at 11am. I am earlier in the day.
