Leishman, who started on the 10th, scored two bogeys and two birdies on his first nine goals before making a birdie on four of his last seven holes at Royal Pines.
Leaders Jake McLeod and Australian compatriot Matt Jager shot 66 goals. Leishman, who was in a tie for fourth place, said his round could have been better.
"I think 7 under would be a good score here," said Leishman.
"It's been one of my goals for a few years, when I did not have my best golf, my best things, still shooting under normal. I am improving.
American Harold Varner III, who won the tournament in 2016 and finished second in the playoffs and sixth in three Australian games at the Royal Pines, shot 69 times.
Defending champion Cameron Smith shot 70 goals, as did Englishman Andrew (Beef) Johnston, who recovered after 3 holes after three holes and had to stop leaving his course. Starting on the 10th, Johnston hooked up the 10 and 12 hole drives.
"To be honest, I almost left the course after 12 years," Johnston said.
"The year was frustrating and yes, I was really annoyed in the past. But I spoke to my girlfriend and she just told me to continue, so I did it and I just tried to stay calm. Fortunately, I returned it.
