BMW has begun testing modifications to its BMW M4 DTM car to comply with the new Clbad 1 regulations for 2019, running a new two-liter turbo engine in private trials.
Bruno Spengler drove the car for testing at the BMW Group factory in Dingolfing, Germany, as the automaker began preparations for the new DTM era.
The introduction of common regulations with the Japanese Super GT series starts in 2019, with the new engines expected to produce additional power of around 100 hp and significantly increase the top speeds of the German series of flat-bottomed sheet metal models. 180 mph.
The new engines will be much more efficient, the four-cylinder turbo engines replacing the outgoing V8s.
A number of changes had to be made to accommodate the new engine, including changes to the air inlets and outlets, as well as the intake and exhaust system.
Other phases of evolution, based on the new regulations, will be put in place before the homologation of the new car.
"BMW Turbo Power has been successful in motorsport for almost 50 years," said Jens Marquardt, director of BMW Motorsport. "From the first year with a BMW turbo engine, in 1969, Dieter Quester was immediately crowned European champion of pbadenger cars with the BMW 2002 TI.
"In 1973, the 2002 BMW turbo became the first German-series car to be equipped with a turbocharger. We now add a new chapter to this story in the DTM.
"Our first kilometers of Clbad 1 went very positively. We are satisfied with all functional tests. The new turbo looks great.
"However, his most impressive efficiency is his trump, though he's considerably more powerful than his predecessor."
Bruno Spengler, DTM champion in 2012, is delighted with the new era of the series. This is the third time the Canadiens has experienced a major transition in the series since entering the grid in 2005.
"After my first few kilometers with the new DTM engine, I'm looking forward to seeing next season," Spengler said. "I can imagine how fun it will be to take the track with so many BMW Turbo Power.
"You can feel the extra power; we will be presenting even more spectacle for the fans in 2019. The time spent at full throttle is reduced – but the top speed is higher than before. We will have to work even harder while driving. "
The first official ITR test before next season takes place at Autodromo do Estoril, Portugal, between 11th and 14th November.
