Boomtown Rats band leader Bob Geldof was criticized on social media for his tricky stage presence and grumpy jokes at the ARIA Awards on Wednesday night.

Key points:

  • The rock legend's joke on Keith Urban has caused public moans
  • But his praises of Kasey Chambers have been applauded
  • The appearance triggered a debate on promising international acts to be presented at awards ceremonies in Australia

Geldof was brought on stage to present the final prize of the evening, the song of the year.

After being introduced by Keith Urban, who was organizing the ceremony, Geldof seemed to have forgotten the name of the county singer.

"Welcome to ARIA," said Urban.

Geldof replied with something very similar to "thank you Jim" and very little to "Keith".

Urban asked Live Aid's organizer about when he had organized the awards ceremony in 1991, and joked that he could not remember the event.

Banter between the two sparked painful reactions among the crowd, Geldof's joke about Urban's performance sparking uncomfortable moans.

Geldof then left the script before announcing the nominees for the prize, saying he was unable to read the prompter.

"I'm inventing that, but it looks good to me," he says.

He paid tribute to country musician Kasey Chambers, inducted into the Hall of Fame, "not only for his outstanding music, but for her as a person, she is amazing."

This sparked an emotional response from Chambers and public applause.

This appearance sparked a discussion on social networks about international artists participating in Australian shows. Some viewers have stated that the Geldof segment was a "recoil" and "embarrbading" move.

"We have our own stars, let them shine," said an ABC viewer on Twitter.

"His goal is to recognize local achievements and so I think that in principle, the presenters should be Australian," added another.
