The editor of West Australian, Brett McCarthy, resigned today after nearly 10 years at the helm of the only metropolitan newspaper in WA.
Seven West Media WA Executive Director Maryna Fewster said McCarthy had recently considered modifying the newsroom business, which had led him to consider his own future.
McCarthy has been the editor of the newspaper since March 2009 and was recently promoted to the position of editor-in-chief overseeing both The West Australian and his Sunday stablemate, The Sunday Times.

"After nearly 10 years in this very demanding role, I decided that it was time to pause before looking for new challenges," Mr. McCarthy said.
"I really think the time has come to move on." I appreciate [Seven West chairman Kerry] Stokes and Mrs. Fewster allowed this to happen quickly so that I could enjoy the holidays with my wife and children before looking into the future. "
During his 30-year career, Mr. McCarthy worked for a number of newspaper publications and moved to WA in 2001 as editor of the Sunday Times.
Mr. Stokes paid tribute to Mr. McCarthy's work in the paper.
"Brett proved that he was an excellent editor for many years," he said.
"He led the West with integrity and deepened the newspaper's ties with the community, I always respected his judgment."
More soon.
