Carrion is a horror game that distorts the basic premise. Instead of the victim, you are the monster. Described as an "inverted horror game" by Phobia Game Studio developers, Carrion places the player in the role of an amorphous creature. Instead of fleeing and trying to escape, players will be tasked with finding opportunities to attack and grow. The pixel art style is reminiscent of the Metroidvania genre, but the role change keeps all the suspense.
Carrion takes place in a scientific facility, where scientists have studied – and imprisoned – the monster. The player finds refuge in vents and corridors, slowly progressing in the installation and strengthening himself. A bit like the recent Observation No Code, Carrion takes a very simple principle and makes it intriguing by changing the role of the player. The animation is also very well done; Seeing the symbiotic creature breaking and blazing a path finds the right balance between fascinating and bewildering.
Carrion should be released on PC and consoles in 2020.
