A young distracted driver changing music on her car radio when she fatally struck a Victoria cyclist sobbed while she was sent to jail for nine months.

Emma Kent, 24, was sentenced to a term of imprisonment and a two-year prison term in Victorian County Court on Monday.

She was trying to connect her phone's Bluetooth to the car's audio system when she hit 57-year-old Gareth Davies on Black Forest Drive in Macedon on December 10th.

Judge Sue Pullen noted that Kent had expressed remorse and guilt for his actions, but had insisted that a term of imprisonment was necessary.

"The distress of both families, Mr. Davies and yours, is obvious," she said. "But their loss is permanent." Kent told the police that she was distracted for about 10 seconds.

Tears also flowed during the last Kent court hearing on November 14, when Mr. Davies' daughters recounted their loss.

"In the first 24 hours after my discovery, I had the impression that the world and my life were ending," Rhia Davies told the court.

Kent sobbed throughout Monday's proceedings and seemed shocked when the sentence was announced.

The driver pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death.
