FFA must stop Usain from doing ‘the bolt’

THE fastest man alive’s decision to “stay put” in Australia pleases me.

Anyone who has read this column knows I have always been in favour of Usain Bolt’s presence at the Central Coast Mariners.

His badociation with the Mariners and the FFA has generated mbadive interest in Australia football and will continue to do so whether or not he ends up playing professionally.

That is why the rumours of an approach from Malta club Valletta FC frustrated me.

With an open cheque book in hand the club hoped to entice Bolt overseas to spearhead their Champions League aspirations.

It would’ve been so easy for Bolt to take the easy option, signing with the cashed-up club and in doing so make his dream a reality.

Bolt has shown glimpses of his potential, two goals against Macarthur South West United at the weekend are proof of that, but he’s got a long way to go yet.

Against professional defenders Bolt will have his every flaw exposed and punished.

That is why his decision to stay with the Mariners on trial is a smart one.

He needs time to develop, hone his skills and discover exactly what type of player he is.

The FFA needs to come to the party now, though.

Valletta’s approach is a clear sign that clubs are interested in Bolt as a player and marketing tool which is exactly why the A-League needs him to stay here.

More people than ever are talking about the A-League nationally and abroad – interest we must capitalise on.

Bolt doesn’t need to play a professional game this season but he does play professionally it has to be here.

Why?

Because the interest his name appearing on a pro club’s team sheet would be immeasurable.

I believe his presence on the substitute bench alone would generate a few 1000 extra ticket sales – great revenue for any club.

And there is the commercial value generated by broadcast deals and sponsor interest.

We have to give Bolt a reason to stay though and the simplest way to do that is cash. Cold hard cash.

The FFA need to give this man a wage be it from their own coffers or a third party.

They need to explain to all the clubs it is strictly a once only deal and all the clubs need to be on board.

We need to stop Bolt from doing the bolt – for the good of the game.
