Beijing: An uncontrollable truck hit a fleet of 31 cars in northwestern China, leaving 15 dead and 44 wounded, Lanzhou City authorities said Sunday.
The accident occurred Saturday night when the driver of the heavy articulated truck lost control of the downhill highway and collided with cars lined up at a toll booth, Lanzhou's propaganda department said.
Ten of the 44 injured were seriously injured, authorities said.
Li Feng, the driver of the big truck, was the subject of investigation and police surveillance, according to the Xinhua official news agency.
The trailer was registered in Liaoning Province, located southeast of Li, more than 2,000 kilometers from the scene of the accident. It was the first time Li had been driving on a stretch of road, the China Daily said.
The state broadcaster CCTV aired a video of the scene showing heavy snow and numerous crippled and crooked vehicles.
Fatal road accidents are common in China, where traffic rules are often flouted or not enforced.
Last week, a fight between a driver and a pbadenger caused the fall of a bridge bus in a river in southwestern China, causing 15 casualties on board.
According to the authorities, in 2015 alone, 58,000 people were killed in accidents that occurred throughout the country.
Road traffic offenses were attributed to almost 90% of accidents resulting in death or injury that year.
