On July 24, Lovato was hospitalized following an overdose at her home in Hollywood Hills. She stayed in the hospital for nearly two weeks before being released for treatment.

The former child star has struggled for years against substance abuse, mental illness and eating disorders. In 2010, Lovato started treatment where she sought help for bipolar disorder, bulimia, self-harm and addiction. She relapsed after leaving the treatment center, then entered a sober living center for one year.

Lovato revealed that she had celebrated six years of sobriety in March. Three months later, she said about a recent relapse by releasing her new autobiographical single, "Sober", on June 21.
