How diabetes affects the body

Extreme fatigue, blurred vision and
increased thirst are some of the symptoms, but what happens to the body when
you are diabetic – and what is the cause?

When you eat your food, your body
digests it into smaller parts; namely vitamins, minerals, proteins, lipids and
sugar – sugar is also called glucose. Your pancreas responds by releasing the
insulin hormone that helps your body to change the glucose of your food into
the energy that your body can use as fuel.

People with diabetes do not have the
good amount of insulin to help balance blood sugar levels in their
body. This causes a lack of energy that leaves them feeling weak, drained and
thirsty.

When your body is not doing enough
insulin or when your body has difficulty using insulin, you develop
Diabetes. High blood sugar can damage your organs over time.

Your body could also respond to the
lack of insulin by releasing more glucose – and if your blood sugar becomes
too high, glucose could seep into the urine and cause serious damage
your nerves and your blood vessels.

Untreated diabetes damages the body in many
ways, leading to:

  • Increased risk of
    heart disease due to hypertension.
  • Nervous lesions during
digestion leading to nausea, constipation or diarrhea – especially
the case of type 2 diabetes.
  • Traffic and
Damaged nerves can cause dry skin, slow healing, fungi and bacteria.
    infections and foot problems.
  • Toxic acid called
ketones can develop, which results from the breakdown of your body by fat and
Proteins to get energy, which could be deadly.
  • Serious eye
damage due to pressure and swelling of the blood vessels.
  • Renal failure
and high levels of protein in your urine.

Talk to your doctor, take your
medications and monitor your symptoms. Be sure to maintain a healthy diet and
exercise regularly – this will work wonders for creating a healthy quality of
life.
