Perhaps the biggest twist of this movie will reveal that it's only the beginning.
Universal Pictures unveiled Friday the first big comic-con trailer in San Diego on Friday, throwing a full look at Mr. Night Shyamalan's highly anticipated Glbad . Shyamalan, a filmmaker known for his intelligent twists, delivered his biggest still at the end of 2016 Split . The James McAvoy starrer was revealed as a follow-up to Shyamalan Unbreakable (2000) and reached $ 278.5 million worldwide on a $ 9 million budget.
Shyamalan's plans for a final chapter The success of Split and moviegoers were rewarded knowing that a trilogy that many believed would never come true would finally be complete. While Unbreakable did not encounter the instant success of his previous film, The Sixth Sense (1999), Shyamalan's deconstruction of the American superhero / villain complex at way of a complex and restrained thriller has become a cult clbadic over the years. Amidst the current explosion of superhero movies, Shyamalan movies are more prescient than ever. Uniting the casts of Unbreakable and Split Glbad sees Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy, and Anya Taylor-Joy team up for what is the most complex film by Shyamalan for the moment
True to its form, the Shyamalan trailer opens by anchoring us in the real world. The film's stakes are introduced by a new character in the world of Shyamalan, Dr. Ellie Staple (Sarah Paulson), a psychologist specializing in the treatment of patients with illusions of being superheroes and villains. She says it's a growing field, and we learn that her patients are none other than Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson), Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy), and David Dunn (Bruce Willis). The last time we saw Crumb and Dunn, the two men were free, seeming to be heading for an inevitable conflict. How they end up in Dr. Staple's care remains to be seen. Given that Shyamalan is known for his aesthetics and telegraphs his themes through visuals, it is interesting to note that Crumb is placed between Price and Dunn, noting only the placement of Split in the trilogy, but also the psychological situation of Crumb. being caught between heroism and villainy because of his multiple personalities.
In the years following the events of 1945-19005 Unbreakable David Dunn continued to embrace his role as a costumed hero, a job he describes as being "Safe." It will be interesting to see if Dunn has only done battle with crooks, or has he met other people with special abilities and an awareness of their roles in the morality dichotomy of comics. Despite his belief in his abilities, which he calls feelings, Dunn kept a low profile – his rain poncho giving him a ghostly appearance that allows him to stay in the shade, rather than dying. exist in the same scene from the comic superhero Price told him about. Yet, given his role as "protector" and the emergence of other people with abilities, it will be fascinating to see how Dunn evolves over the course of the film and if the world can hug him out of Shadow and provide him with a moniker at the height of his heroic efforts.
Dunn's arch-enemy, Elijah Price, aka Mr. Glbad, reveals that he was waiting for the world to see that they exist. Although the trailer does not provide much clues in his master plan (and you know he has one), he places his meeting with Crumb as the villains teaming up. If Unbreakable and Glbad were two original stories of superheroes and parallel superheroes, Glbad is the sequel in which the villain returns more powerful and with a second villain in tow, and the hero is in the face of losing everything. Shyamalan does not only seem to play with comic conventions, but also with conventions of continuation. While comics and superhero sequences usually make us wait for a result where the hero wins, the fact that it is titled Glbad gives us reasons to pause. If superheroes and bad guys existed in the real world, who would be the winner?
Kevin Wendell Crumb aka the Beast, seems to have continued his crimes of kidnapping young women, which likely leads to his meeting of Price and Dunn. Several new personalities are also revealed in the trailer, which will further create the feeling of unpredictability that has worked so well for Split . We have glimpses of several action sequences in which Crumb fights Dunn, but we are also witnessing what might possibly lead to a more interesting revelation as his former victim Casey Cooke meets him, apparently in the process of to beg him. Perhaps Casey, thanks to his empathy instead of Dunn's, could possibly save Crumb and offer a better result for where he will finally fall on the specter of heroes and villains.
Price, and Crumb, the other trio of the film, consisting of Casey Cooke, Dunn Joseph's son (Spencer Treat Clark) and Price's mother (Charlayne Woodard) could ultimately play the most important in the establishment of this world. So much of the cartoon canon focuses on the legacy, those who take the torch of the hero and villain and continue the fight. Casey Cooke, whose name is alliterative like David Dunn, can be positioned as a superhero and eventual super-ala Robin. The fate of Joseph Dunn may not be as clear as a comic bookstore, with neon signs reading Heroes and Villains over his head in different places. which places the character in an inevitable decision. Price's mother, who has remained nameless, is also in an interesting position as many superpowers are inherited. Could Elie's mother have a similar genius-level intellect that could set him up as a teacher X teacher at Casey? Glbad would be a conclusion, but going through the box office of Split the eternal nature of comics, and the clues that Shyamalan seems to drop, perhaps the greatest turn from this movie will reveal that it is only the beginning.
Glbad will be released in theaters on January 18 th 2019.
