HUAWEI has quietly become one of the best smartphone manufacturers in the world.
Very popular in Asia and Europe (and banned in the United States because of espionage fears), some Australian consumers may not be very familiar with Chinese smartphones. If so, it is probably time to familiarize yourself with the Mate 20 Pro.
Huawei's flagship product is easily one of the best new smartphones on the market. With a powerful new 7-nanometer chip that rivals Apple's new A12 bionic chip in its latest iPhone range, the Mate 20 Pro represents one of Huawei's biggest advances, with state-of-the-art technology in a comfortable design, a 3D facial recognition, a fingerprint on the sensor screen and a feature-rich triple camera.
It also offers new technologies such as reverse wireless charging, which means that you can install other smartphones by simply placing them above the Mate 20 Pro – it's certainly a sleight of hand.
DESIGN
Weighing 189g, the sleek handset is lightweight compared to the iPhone XS Max at 208g despite the two devices having a height of 157mm. Its narrow and slim design makes it particularly easy to handle and its shape is pleasant in the palm.
Like Samsung's recent Galaxy smartphones, Huawei has a slightly rounded OLED screen around the edges and is surrounded by a metal frame. Coupled with the glbad-to-edge screen, it is really fantastic.
The 6.39-inch OLED display has a resolution of 3120 x 1440 pixels and an HDR10 support.
I'm not sure I prefer the rounded screen to the flatter design of most other phones, but the strong contrast and vivid color of the Mate 20 Pro is one of the best features.
At the bottom of the phone is a USB-C port but no headphone jack. The phone comes with a dongle to connect wired headphones. A loudspeaker is also noticeably absent at the base of the phone, as it is worth noting that the sound is pumped out of the USB-C port.
On the right side is the wake / kill switch, just below the volume buttons. You can take a screen shot by holding both of them with your thumb, which is very convenient to do with a single number. (You can also take a screenshot by tapping twice on your finger, one of the many gestures you can use to navigate the phone.)
GUTS AND SOFTWARE
The Mate 20 Pro is the first device to use Huawei's new Kirin 980 processor, a significant improvement over last year's Kirin 970 chip.
The powerful hardware badociated with Google Assistant makes artificial intelligence technology one of the best in the market, as Huawei calls it, "the world's first smartphone with dual artificial intelligence."
Launching and scanning between applications is fast and transparent, and for the most part, the interface is smooth, even when running some data-hungry applications.
The Pro offers up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, which should be more than enough for any user.

The software does not seem to work as easily as competing flagship devices such as Apple iPhones or Google Pixel.
The phone uses Huawei's EMUI 9 specialized software based on the Android 9.0 Pie operating system. The biggest change in the company compared to Android lies in its energy saving features.
The system is much more aggressive to prevent applications from running in the background, which actually helps to increase battery life. With general use and no heavy play or anything, I would receive two full days of use per charge.
Huawei's FaceID works by projecting 30,000 dots on your face to detect contours and recognize you. When setting up, it seemed like it might be tricky, but it worked very well. With the raise enabled, this happens so quickly that you will not even notice that the device is unlocking itself.
However, you must make sure that your face is in front of the camera when you use it because it may have difficulty taking unusual angles. For this reason, I've turned off device unlocking, but it's worth it to enhance the security of some applications, such as email and banking.
CAMERA
The triple rear camera is a real badet to the smartphone: a 40-megapixel main camera, a 20-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens. The three work together to take 10 megapixel images with a 5x hybrid zoom. The camera can achieve a 10x digital zoom, but the quality of the image begins to suffer. It can also take close-up shots at 2.5 cm without losing focus with its Super Macro capability.
The brightness may be a bit low, but with the iPhone XS and Google Pixel 3, the camera is powerful. Below you will find a comparison between the iPhone X and the Mate 20 Pro with standard settings.
It contains software that makes your picture sharp after you have taken it, provided you hold the camera still. As a result, you will get better results if you use a smartphone tripod that probably should not disturb most users.
The camera offers different modes, including underwater photography, but despite its high water resistance index (IP68), Huawei indicates that you need a waterproof case to use this setting.
This is not the first time that Huawei has a triple camera in its smartphone, but this time it also offers a fun enough effect that allows you to turn video into monochrome while keeping the subject of the photo in color. The camera's slow motion can record at 960 frames per second.
Charge
Like all leading smartphones, the wireless charger and the newest ability to wirelessly charge another device.
As long as the other smartphone has Qi wireless compatibility, you should simply turn on the function under the Battery section in the settings and place it on top of the Mate 20 Pro to charge the battery. It's not a feature you'll probably use a lot, but it might be useful sometimes, and it's a smart feature that gives the phone a unique point of difference.
Despite the fact that it has lost its advantage in smartphone technology, Apple remains the most popular smartphone brand among Australian consumers. But of course, the advantage of Android is to have more control over the configuration of your device and not be held in the walled garden of Apple.
As a long-time Apple user, I understand that it's easy to get used to one operating system over another. However, if there was a device to consider, it is probably this one.
COST
With a price of $ 1599, you certainly know that you pay for a premium smartphone, but it ranks well with the flagship devices of its competitor.
