Former Essendon coach, James Hird, was hit by a car while he was cycling in the suburbs of Melbourne this afternoon.
Police said the collision occurred at the corner of Palmer and Burnley streets in Richmond around 3 pm.
Hird, 45, was rushed to Epworth Hospital with wrist and knee injuries, confirmed Victoria Ambulance.
His state remains unknown.
One witness told 9News that she had seen the emergency services at the scene but had not seen Hird.
"It's horrible, I can not believe it," she said.
Hird is no stranger to bike accidents, having suffered a severe concussion in 2015 when his bike fell on a streetcar track.
He was returning home after his football training at the time.
Aged 45, he has been keeping a low profile since his resignation from his coaching position at Essendon in August 2015.
His coaching mandate was turned upside down by the 2012 supplement program and the subsequent investigation by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority, which led to the banning of 34 bombers, both old and new. current, for the 2016 season.
Before the saga of supplements, Hird had been one of the most valuable sons of Windy Hill. He had played 253 games for Essendon and won the Brownlow medal in 1996.
