St George Illawarra Dragons playmaker Gareth Widdop shocked club officials after calling for an immediate release from the joint venture.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the homesickness quoted by the English international is why he wanted to leave the club while he remained three years on his one million dollar contract a year .

Widdop, badociated with a large sum of money, led Ben Hunt to lead the Dragons in the final last season, before shoulder injuries forced the spotlight to be operated out of season.

The announcement of the shock could leave the door open to the Dragons to target the Warriors' unwanted star, Shaun Johnson.

Johnson, the face of the rugby league in New Zealand, is about to leave his beloved Warriors after applying for an official release Tuesday from the last year of his contract in 2019.

The Warriors still have not offered Johnson a contract beyond 2019 and several clubs had already conducted covert investigations after the 28 years.

Johnson apparently did not catch the news because he is one of the club's priority rookies since his arrival in 2011.

The New Zealand international spoke to Facebook to tell his story and confirmed that he "would expand my wings and see what happens".

But it is the biggest rival of the Dragons, Cronulla, who is ready to attract the 28-year-old Kiwi test half-test, with a potential offer of four years in the box.

The Sharks are eager to attract Johnson before the new season by offering a new contract to veterans of 162 games once their recruiting team has come together to finalize the offer on Wednesday.
