Between 2014 and 2015, the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital (COCH) in Cheshire saw the number of newborns die double without any apparent explanation.
There were nine neonatal deaths in 2015 to four in 2014, according to data published by the research group Mothers and Babies: Reducing Risks through Confidential Investigations and Investigations (MBRRACE-UK)
Counselors pediatric trust began to worry about the unexplained death increase "in neighborhoods in June 2015. But internal and independent investigations have not found a definitive cause.
Three years later, police arrested Lucy Letby, 28, a trust nurse suspected of killing eight babies, as part of a broader investigation into the deaths of 17 infants between March 2015 and July 2016.

MBRRACE-UK is a university collaboration that aims to help trusts improve by showing how they compare at the national level and between hospitals.
While the COCH was able to identify the peak of mortality from its own data, the MMBRACE in the small neonatal unit of Chester, which sees only about 3,000 births each year, the rate of mortality in 2015 rose to 2.96 babies who die per 1,000 births – compared with 1.32 in 2014
C was the highest rate in 2015 among all neonatal units of equivalent size in the Kingdom One, those who see 2,000 to 3,999 births a year, the data show.
Even among the trusts that are set up for the sickest and most premature newborns – hospitals with a neonatal intensive care unit at level three and specialized surgical teams – only six out of 26 units nationwide had a higher mortality rate and many were significantly lower.
published by MBRRACE-UK date back to 2016 – published in June 2018 – and show that COCH mortality rates were still among the highest, but do not give them in a format comparable to previous years.
The police investigation is also examining a number of near misses where babies became seriously ill but were successfully resuscitated.
Prior to the police investigation, the COCH established an independent review of deaths in its neighborhoods in July 2016 and decided to downgrade its unit. no longer provides neonatal intensive care to premature babies.
Led by the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health, he reported in December 2016 and was not able to identify a definitive cause.
The report notes that the numbers of doctors and nurses at that time were low, and that he had been busier than usual with a higher proportion of babies born low-weight – but
