Matildas coach Alen Stajcic made the squad fully aware of what’s at stake with the friendly games against Chile and is determined to see Australia enter the World Cup as a top-seeded nation, avoiding the likes of USA, Germany, France and England in the group stage.
“I talk about it a lot and we talk about it as a group a lot,” Stajcic said. “We’ve set ourselves the goal of being in the top three in the world and I think the rankings in women’s football are very accurate.”
His objective will be boosted by the return of star striker Sam Kerr who missed the recent friendlies away to England and France. Kerr will play her first international on home soil in a year, having since been propelled to being the star of womens’ football. The 25-year-old has become the face of the game and is the major drawcard for Saturday’s match but has found it difficult adjusting to the limelight
“You always want that as a kid, you want to be known as a sports star but it can be a little confronting sometimes,” Kerr said.
