Max Verstappen has revealed one of his biggest regrets since his stint in Formula 1. He does not involve former teammate Daniel Ricciardo.
Verstappen took on importance when he debuted at the Australian Grand Prix in 2015, at the age of only 17 years old. In 2016, he became the youngest driver to win a race with his victory at the Spanish Grand Prix.
But he said his biggest regret was not having the opportunity to fight with former world champion Fernando Alonso, who had been a victim of a poorly competitive car throughout Verstappen's career.
The arrival of Verstappen in Formula 1 in 2015 coincided with the unfortunate pbading of Alonso de Ferrari to McLaren-Honda, who saw the Spaniard relegated to the back of the pitch with a car and an engine set that was not just not up to it.
The four seasons of Alonso with McLaren did not give any results among the top four. The partnership with Honda has ended in acrimony after three years.
"It's a shame that I've never really run against him," Verstappen said.
"Of course, he was in F1 when I was there, but I never really struggled with him because he was always behind because of the problems they encountered." So that's one thing I could regret.
"I ran Seb [Vettel], I ran Lewis [Hamilton]and it was nice.
"But never with Fernando, where I think when I watched TV, he was always the one who really fought them too. So of course I ran with him, but I never fought him. Which is a shame."
Alonso announced in August that he would leave McLaren at the end of the 2018 season, even though he left the door open for a possible return to Formula One in 2020.
He will spend 2019 driving in various categories, including for the second time at the Indianapolis 500.
A win in this race would make him only the second driver after Graham Hill to win the "triple crown": the Monaco Grand Prix, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 500th of Indianapolis.
Verstappen will become the undisputed leader of the Red Bull in 2019, following the departure of Daniel Ricciardo to Renault.
Ricciardo has been replaced by Frenchman Pierre Gasly, who has not yet finished on the podium of his brief career in Formula One.
Although the 22-year-old is highly regarded, he lacks experience on the front of the stage and is expected to be second in Verstappen, at least in 2019.
