Metro Trains delays Melbourne: Hurstbridge, Mernda major delays

COMMUTERS are calling for refunds after a track fault and trespbader caused “chaotic” Melbourne peak-hour scenes as several train lines were brought to a standstill.

The train chaos started just after 4pm, with buses replacing trains from Parliament to Clifton Hill until trains resumed about 5.30pm.

Services on the Hurstbridge, Mernda, Lilydale, Belgrave, Alamein and Glen Waverley all suffered major delays due to a track fault at Flinders Street, with a trespbader on the tracks near Croydon added to Metro’s woes.

Public Transport Users Association president Daniel Bowen said the “catastrophic” delays were disappointing for commuters.

“It is very disappointing that an infrastructure fault has caused such chaos on the train network in the middle of peak hour,” he said.

“Metro needs to rectify the situation as quickly as possible, investigate how and why it happened and make sure this doesn’t happen again.

“You’d hope Metro would consider refunds.

“More than that they need to make sure this sort of catastrophic major delay doesn’t happen again.”

Hurstbridge commuter Moshidi Manaka said her trip home from Melbourne Central to Dennis train station was tripled to 90 minutes.

“I witnessed a woman crying out of frustration at not being able to pick up her child in time from childcare,” she said.

“The situation at Parliament was chaotic, it seemed to be a bit of a mess.

“It was crazy.

“People should be compensated.

“They (Metro) should run free trains to the city tomorrow.”

Commuters took to social media to vent their frustration:

What’s more annoying is that by the time anyone was able to get to Clifton Hill, the trains had resumed again from Flinders.
The communication is terrible – with this many frequent delays and suspensions you’d think Metro would have a better response plan.
