Last March, Apple launched a new entry-level iPad, and it seems that Microsoft has taken note. The newly unveiled 10-inch Surface Go is Microsoft's most affordable and most portable Surface, offering users a cheaper way to take full advantage of Windows 10.
The Surface Go comes with Windows 10 S mode by default, which limits you to Windows Store apps (and limits power management at the same time); but an upgrade to Windows 10 is free and simple on the device.
Of course, lowering the price and reducing weight, and some compromises must be made along the way – that's true for Microsoft, Apple, and everyone who makes a laptop. The Surface Go is powered by a slower Intel Pentium Gold 4415Y dual-core processor, which means that the most demanding applications and games will probably be removed from the game.
Combined with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage at the lowest setting, although both can be increased if you are willing to pay more. The 10-inch screen, aspect ratio of 3: 2 runs at a resolution of 1,800 x 1,200 pixels, which is still a drop in the high-end Surface Pro.
It seems clear Microsoft is turning as a device for students and budget-conscious, with this smaller and lighter screen (up to 1.15 pounds or 522 grams) making it a tablet that you can slide in your bag and carry more easily than the largest and most powerful Microsoft Surfaces. The slate comes with all the usual Surface accessories, but they also cost: Surface Pen ($ 99.99), a new Surface Go Type Cover (starting at $ 99.99) and a new Surface Mobile Mouse ($ 34.99).
We will have to wait to see how much this Pentium processor meets the requirements of Windows 10, but Microsoft says it's been working with Intel to optimize chip performance with Windows and Microsoft Office. The company also claims that users will be able to take out nine hours of the Surface Go battery.
There is also a USB-C port (a first for a surface device, a microSD card reader), a standard headset for 3.5mm Jack, and the familiar Surface crutch. A model with LTE capabilities is promised later this year.
If you stick to checking your emails, browsing the web and doing light office work, the Surface Go should turn out to be a pretty powerful device, and Microsoft seems to have kept it looking usual premium while reducing the price down. At the very least, he now has a Windows tablet to go one-on-one with the iPad.
As for Surface Go's most important specification, the starting price is reasonable at US $ 399. The tablet is in pre-order today, July 10, in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and several other European countries, with a wider availability soon .
