Middle Tennessee mission group trapped in Haiti during unrest

MT. JULIET, Tennessee – Nearly two dozen middle-clbad people in Tennessee are stranded in Haiti after riots broke out in the capital

Demonstrations took place on Saturday in Port-au-Prince following rising prices fuel. As a result, the roads were closed and many flights canceled.

A mission team of 17 to 18 people with the United Methodist Church of Providence was scheduled to return home on Sunday, but their Delta flight was one of many canceled.

PUMC issued a statement:

Thank you for your prayers for our mission team in Haiti! As Pastor Pierce mentioned this morning in worship, despite the unrest in Port-au-Prince and the surrounding area, our team is safe in their hotel in Montrouis. They are in a good mood and feel your love, your support and your prayers! Although initially planned to return today, it seems that the team 's return will be delayed for a day or two, and many people are working hard to find others. arrangements to bring them home safely. Until then, the team wants us to know that they are safe and sound in their hotel and that they will stay there until the return is done safely. Join us as we continue to pray for the peace and protection of God for our team, for the other mission teams in the region and for the people they are there to love and serve in Haiti.

Delta flights have resumed in Haiti as we continue to monitor the situation there and support customers in need, their safety and security remain our top priority.

Delta contacted a CNN member reports that more than 100 Americans are in a hotel, which protesters reportedly attempted to set on fire on Saturday.

No US injuries have been reported, according to the US Embbady.

Tourists and missionaries were warned on Saturday to take shelter on the spot.
