Could Samsung use lasers to measure heart rate, blood pressure and other vital signs? It's a question that Galaxy fans were asking for in 2016 shortly after a patent of Samsung for the USPTO.
But of course, a patent does not mean that the company is working on a product, and years go by without any further clues about a new type of Health sensor is making its way into one of Samsung smartphones or smartwatches.
USPTO But a recent trademark filing suggests that Samsung might have continued to work on the "interferometric speckle laser system" described in the 2016 patents.
Last week, Samsung filed the trademark "Samsung Speckle" in Europe. We were made aware by Brian Conroy who called Trademark Ninja.
Samsung's trademark filing does not contain much when it comes to revealing information, but the name certainly sounds as expected for any device. The application is for this kind of goods:
Computers; Hardware; Peripherals adapted for use with computers; Electronic tablets; Laptop; Data storage devices; monitors; Headphones for use with computers; Wireless headphones; Leather notebook case; Protective covers for electronic tablets; Mouse (computer peripheral); Computer keyboards; Convertible PCs, namely convertible computers and convertible PCs; Wireless speakers; VR picture apparatus and instruments; Simulator in the form of glbades for virtual reality; Camera image in the form of glbades for virtual reality.
Of course, speckle is a word with meaning, it is not a coined term for a product. This means "a mark with a large number of small spots or spots of color" or "a random granular pattern".
So the mark could apply to a lot of other things, including ultrasonic devices made by Samsung. includes "reduced stain". The brand could relate to medical equipment, although Conroy said it had been filed by the same brand agency as Samsung Electronics for products such as TVs and smartphones. It could even be a reference to Samsung's sparkling gadgets covered with Swarovski crystals.
But since 2016, Samsung has asked for several other patents that rely on the concept of shining a laser on the skin, looking at the speckle pattern, and then using to, for example, authenticate the user.
The Apple Watch is currently using LED lights to measure the heart rate and authenticate the wearer. It would be logical for Samsung's speckle sensor to be included on a smartwatch. Android Central reports that Samsung has announced the upcoming release of a new smartwatch called Samsung Galaxy Watch, also based on recent brands.
