AFTER a nearly seven-month trip from Earth, NASA's Insight probe landed successfully on Mars!

The new robot landed on the red planet shortly before 7 am AEST, Insight confirming on Twitter that they were now "at home".

"I feel Mars … and I will soon know your heart. With this landing safely, I am here. I am at home, "reads the message.

Control of NASA's mission in California broke out with applause and applause following the news, with a vision posted on Twitter showing the flight controllers hugging and beaming with joy.

"Today, we have successfully landed on Mars for the eighth time in the history of humanity," said Jim Bridenstine, NASA Administrator.

"InSight will study the interior of Mars and teach us valuable scientific knowledge to prepare us to send astronauts to the moon and then to Mars.

"This accomplishment represents the ingenuity of America and our international partners and demonstrates the dedication and perseverance of our team. The best of NASA is coming, and it will arrive soon. "

It was understood that the landing took only six and a half minutes.

"We reached the Martian atmosphere at 19,800 km / h (12,300 mph), and the entire sequence to land on the surface took only six and a half minutes," said Tom Hoffman, Project Manager. InSight at JPL.

"During this short period of time, InSight had to autonomously perform dozens of operations and perform them flawlessly – and by all indications, that's exactly what our spacecraft did."
