Irate customers have taken to social media to vent their frustration, with some complaining the service had been down for more than six hours.
About 9.30pm on Friday, Telstra issued another statement which said some networks had been restored but the issue was ongoing and again apologised to customers for the inconvenience.
“We have seen some improvement on the issue impacting some machine to machine data services, including EFTPOS and ATMs, however we are still working on full restoration,” a Telstra spokesman said.
“The issue has our highest priority and we apologise for the impact it is having on customers.”
Banks, including ANZ, also begun issuing statements on Friday night after being flooded with complaints from frustrated customers.
“We are aware of a nationwide telecommunications outage that’s impacting some of our business customers’ EFTPOS machines,” ANZ said in a statement.
“We are seeking updates from our telecommunications partner and will let you know if there’s a timeframe for this being fixed or a work-around.”
Telstra has not given a timeframe for when the issue will be resolved.
It comes just two days after a separate major outage affected some of Telstra’s cloud services, including its private cloud platform and applications.
The telco has been hit with multiple outages in recent months, which prompted its shares to drop to a seven-year low in May.
Australia’s biggest telco alerted investors earlier this year that competition for mobile and internet customers would leave it struggling to meet its full-year earnings guidance, sending its shares down to its lowest level since 2011.
