Niger has launched a mbad polio immunization campaign targeting more than three million children under five years old following the discovery of new cases, a senior official said Friday.
The program was launched Thursday in the regions of Zinder, Maradi, Agadez and Diffa, said Rabi Souley, program manager.
Mbad vaccination comes 12 years after the World Health Organization removed Niger from the list of countries where polio is endemic.
According to state television, six new cases were discovered this year in Zinder, on the border with Nigeria.
Poliomyelitis is a highly infectious viral disease that mainly affects young children and can lead to permanent paralysis. There is no cure and can only be prevented by vaccination.
In April, UN health workers vaccinated more than five million children in Niger, including nearly 42,000 in refugee camps in the Lake Chad region, where Niger is bordering Nigeria, Chad and Cameroon.
