According to recent research, the NRL has one on the AFL regarding the emotional connection of fans with the game.
True North Research is about to present a preview of the research showing that Melbourne Storm reigns supreme in the battle for the top between AFL and NRL, at the Money In Sport conference to be held later this week.
The Melbourne Storm holds a significant lead on all AFL clubs in terms of Emotional Connection (EC) – even in Victoria, a state known for its love of the AFL.
Storm was ranked first for the most visionary leadership among the 62 national and winter league teams.

Georgie Maynard, Director of True North Research, explained the importance of the results.
"Emotions are important because they determine outcomes, affect long-term promotion, and protect property in a crisis," he said.
"A team's BenchMark EC Score ™ score goes beyond behavioral outcomes. It examines the very heart of the relationship between a sports property and sports fans and reveals the drivers of the emotional connection. This then allows the teams to reach a wider audience and increase the loyalty of fans. "
The Cronulla Sharks have seen their BenchMark EC score increase dramatically in their fans.
Due to the turmoil off the field, the Sea Eagle and Canterbury Bulldogs were left in the black, ranking in the last two ranks of the 16 teams in the NRL, with Canterbury in 16th place.
Canterbury is not the only team to rank poorly among its fans, with Australia's men's cricket team ranked 62nd out of 62 teams, closely followed by the Wallabies, who seem to be within reach of their fans.

While Melbourne is pretty well at the top of the NRL standings and Canterbury and Manly are left without much love on the part of their fans, teams like South Sydney Rabbitohs and Canberra Raiders are in the middle of the standings, and the Tigers and Parramatta Wests Eels are part of the teams with a "lower than normal" ranking.
The NSW Blues also felt cold, ranking 15th out of 15 in the national teams, less than the Maroons QLD, 9th.
