The Christmas shopping season has kicked off with Australians predicted to spend more than $50 billion these holidays.

The National Retailers Association believes from today, Christmas sales will be $16.4 billion, up six percent from this time last year.

In Queensland, sales will be up four percent at $9.6 billion.

“Retailers are putting on some great sales today – So get in, save money and save time,” Westfield manager Richard Heinz told 9News.

Although there are an abundance of sales kicking off from today, many local retailers will most likely struggle in the coming months.

“They absolutely depend on this season to get them through the rest of the year,” National Retailers Association’s Dominique Lamb told 9News.

With the recent announcement that clothing retailer Roger David will close all of its 57 stores in the coming weeks, people are being urged to get in sooner rather than leaving it until the last minute.

The holiday season is crucial for most retailers. If they are fortunate enough, they can gather enough money to invest in next season’s stock.

This year, online sales have increased 33 percent and will most likely exceed $3.2 billion.

But people are being urged to consider the smaller businesses who may not make it to the new year.

“I think there are a lot of people out there hanging for the Christmas period sales,” KordaMentha’s Craig Sheperd said.

“I don’t think everyone will get there.”
