Scarlett Johansson's decision to release "Rub and Tug" received praise from GLAAD and transgender community of Hollywood. His casting as Dante "Tex" Gill in the film had met ben brutal game, as Gill was probably transgender and many were irritated that another trans role had gone to a cisgender actor; Johansson representative's initial response – "Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman's representatives to comment" – only exacerbated the situation.
Now that she left the project and apologized for her "insensitive" comment, however, Johansson seems to have smoothed things out.
Sarah Kate Ellis of GLAAD issued the following statement:
"The announcement of Scarlett Johansson, with the transgender voices that spoke of this film, are factors of change for the future of the transgender images in Hollywood Hollywood has changed the way Americans understand the lives of gays and bads, and television is starting to do the same for transgender people with authentic transgender performances that are major hits with critics and the public The film industry has a real opportunity to do the same thing. "
A number of transgender actors also responded positively:
