Star New Zealand right-back Shaun Johnson reportedly called for an immediate release from the final year of his contract with the Warriors.
Just one day after revealing that the club had not yet offered to extend his contract for 2020, Johnson and his management have met with officials of Warriors to request a release for 2019.
The New Zealand Herald has announced that its application has been denied. Cameron George, the boss of the Warriors, and his coach, Stephen Kearney, insisted that the star playmaker see the last 12 months of his contract.
Just yesterday, Johnson went to social media to say he was "spreading his wings" after club officials refused to offer him a contract for 2020 and beyond.
"If you saw the article published a few weeks ago … in a roundabout way, they said that they were in no hurry to sign me again. Since then, they have told me at this point that they will not offer me anything, "Johnson wrote on Facebook.
"That means I'm going to be able to spread my wings and see what's going on there, so that's what I'm doing!"
The 28-year-old made his debut at the Warriors in 2011 and has already expressed the wish to remain a club player throughout his career, a wish that seems unlikely to come true.
"You all know how much warriors represent everything to me and how grateful I am for the opportunity that they have given me to live my dreams and to practice the sport that I love. " Wrote Johnson.
Parramatta and the Wests Tigers are thought to have less leeway than the half-star salary cap, although the Eels would likely hand Mitchell Moses to the Warriors in exchange for Johnson.
