The company behind Australia's most controversial coal mining project has put the finishing touches on a huge solar park capable of powering 23,000 homes each year.
Adani Renewables Australia completed yesterday the construction of its $ 100 million Rugby Run solar project and a 65 megawatt capacity near Moranbah, in central Queensland, with a long-term contract. term to provide electricity to Alinta electricity retailer.
Adani Renewables Australia's Executive Director, Jennifer Purdie, said renewable energy such as solar power was an important part of Australia's energy mix.
The completion of the solar farm comes as environmentalists continue to claim major ecological damage caused by the coal mine proposed by the Indian company in the Galilee Basin.
"The solar energy will be part of the mix," said Dr. Purdie. "But of course, solar energy is only effective when the sun is shining, so other forms of production are needed."
She pointed out that 80% of the electricity produced at Rugby Run, which includes nearly a quarter million solar panels, would be sold to Alinta under a contract in force until the end of the year. in 2030. The remaining 20% would be sold on the spot market.
"The new solar plant is in line with the state government's plan for renewable energy to meet 50 percent of the state's energy needs by 2030," she said. . "Queenslanders want the industry to integrate renewable energy into the production mix."
Adani Renewables plans to build a larger solar power plant in Whyalla, South Australia, capable of generating 140 MW of electricity.
Adani Renewables is a subsidiary of Adani 's Green Energy Group based in India, one of the largest solar energy developers in the world. The company is also studying wind storage systems, batteries and pumps in Australia.
"In Australia, it is unclear whether Adani plays an important role in providing renewable sources of energy globally," she said. The Rugby Run Solar Park is expected to be fully operational during the first half of 2019 with potential for expansion. Final work on the 670-hectare site will include the completion of electrical connection work.
